How to make an SMS QR code

  1. Enter the phone number that should receive the message, with the country code.
  2. Write the message that will be pre-filled (keyword, booking code, feedback prompt…).
  3. Download and print. When scanned, the phone opens the messaging app with everything filled in.

Popular uses

Sending the message is always the user’s choice — the code only prepares it. Normal SMS charges from the user’s mobile plan apply.

Ideas that work well with SMS codes

How the SMS QR format works

The code stores the text SMSTO:number:message. iPhone and Android cameras recognise it and open the messaging app with the recipient and text filled in. Nothing is sent until the person taps Send. Because it uses the normal SMS network, it works on every mobile phone, even without internet or a smartphone app such as WhatsApp. That makes it ideal for older audiences and areas with weak data coverage.

Writing the pre-filled message

SMS or WhatsApp?

SMS reaches every phone but costs the sender a normal text fee in many countries; WhatsApp is free over the internet and supports images and voice notes, but only works for people who have WhatsApp. Many businesses offer both. Create a WhatsApp QR code to go next to this one. See QR codes for small business marketing for more campaign ideas.

Frequently asked questions

Does the SMS send automatically?

No. The phone opens the message for the user to review and send.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, both open the default messaging app.

Should I use WhatsApp instead?

If your audience prefers WhatsApp, use the WhatsApp option in our main QR generator.

Does the SMS QR code work without internet?

Yes. It uses the normal mobile SMS network, so only phone signal is needed.

Can I send to several numbers?

Support for several recipients differs between phones, so we recommend one number per code.

Who pays for the message?

The person who sends it pays their usual SMS rate. Many mobile plans include free SMS.
